From medieval Viterbo to the necropolises of Tarquinia, and on to the suspended village of Civita.

Duration: 16hDifficulty: facile

Day 1: Viterbo and the Necropolis of Tarquinia

The journey begins in Viterbo, the city of the Popes. Walking through the medieval San Pellegrino district means immersing yourself in a labyrinth of alleys, towers, and peperino stone fountains. After visiting the Palazzo dei Papi, the heart of local history, we head towards the Tyrrhenian coast to reach the Necropolis of Monterozzi in Tarquinia. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a unique testimony to the Etruscan civilization thanks to its famous painted tombs, where vibrant colors tell stories of banquets, dances, and daily life dating back over two thousand years. The National Archaeological Museum of Tarquinia, housed in the Renaissance Palazzo Vitelleschi, completes the experience with its extraordinary artifacts, including the famous Winged Horses.

Day 2: Civita di Bagnoregio and the charm of the landscape

The second day is dedicated to Civita di Bagnoregio, known as the "dying city." Perched on a tuff spur and accessible only via a striking pedestrian bridge, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Valle dei Calanchi. The village, suspended in time, enchants with its stone houses, flowers decorating the windows, and the silence that envelops the medieval squares. After exploring Civita, the route continues towards Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe, ideal for a relaxing walk along the shores or to admire the village of Bolsena with its Rocca Monaldeschi.

Practical tips

To visit the Tuscia at its best, a car is the most recommended means of transport, as it allows you to move easily between the villages and rural areas less served by public transport. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes, essential for walking on the cobblestones of the historic centers and for the path that leads to Civita di Bagnoregio. Finally, do not forget to taste the typical local products, such as the extra virgin olive oil of the Tuscia, the chestnuts of the Monti Cimini, and the lake fish dishes, which represent the gastronomic soul of this territory rich in history and traditions.
