Discover Nemi, the charming village overlooking the volcanic lake of the Castelli Romani, famous for its delicious strawberries and ancient history.
Discovering Nemi
Nemi is a pearl nestled in the Colli Albani, a place where time seems to have stood still. Famous worldwide for the production of its small, sweet strawberries, the village offers breathtaking panoramic views of the lake of the same name, of volcanic origin, which stretches silently at the foot of the town.
What to see
- The Historic Center: Walking through the alleys of Nemi is a rejuvenating experience. The village preserves its medieval charm intact, with stone houses and small squares overlooking the lake basin.
- Palazzo Ruspoli: This imposing structure dominates the town center. Although it is a private residence, its external architecture and privileged position make it the visual focal point of the village.
- Museum of Roman Ships: Located on the shores of the lake, this museum is a fundamental place to understand ancient history. It houses reproductions of the enormous ships that belonged to Emperor Caligula, recovered from the lakebed in the last century.
- Lovers' Terrace: An unmissable viewpoint from which to admire the lake panorama. It is the ideal place to take photographs and enjoy the peace of the landscape.
- Church of Santa Maria del Pozzo: A sacred building rich in history and devotion, located in a suggestive position that deserves a short visit for its architectural value.
When to go
Every season gives Nemi a different face. Spring is the ideal time to enjoy the blooming and, above all, the renowned Strawberry Festival held usually in June. Autumn offers warm colors and perfect weather for hiking along the trails surrounding the lake, while winter is perfect for those seeking tranquility and a cozy atmosphere with a glass of local wine.
Practical tips
You cannot leave Nemi without having tasted the famous wild strawberries, served in various ways: from desserts to ice creams, to the typical liqueur. The village is small and easily explored on foot, but it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes to explore the cobbled streets and the paths that descend towards the lake.
How to get there
Nemi is easily reachable from Roma. By car, you can take the Via Appia or the Via dei Laghi, enjoying the view of the woods. For those who prefer public transport, it is possible to use regional trains to Velletri or Albano Laziale and continue with local buses towards the center of Nemi. It is always advisable to check the updated timetables before departure.
