Bracciano: Guida alla scoperta del borgo e del suo lago

Discover Bracciano, a medieval gem just a short distance from Rome. Explore the majestic castle, historic streets, and the shores of the evocative volcanic lake.

What to see in Bracciano

Bracciano is an ideal destination for those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of Rome, offering a perfect mix of history, architecture, and nature. The beating heart of the town is the Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved fortified noble residences in Europe. By visiting its frescoed halls, courtyards, and panoramic terrace, you can admire a breathtaking view that embraces the entire lake below.

After visiting the castle, we recommend getting lost in the alleys of the historic center, known as 'la Sentinella'. Walking through the cobblestone streets, you will discover picturesque corners, small squares, and ancient churches like the Duomo di Santo Stefano. Don't forget to take a walk along the viewpoint, from which the panorama of the Lago di Bracciano becomes the protagonist, especially at sunset.

The Lago di Bracciano

The lake, of volcanic origin, is one of the pearls of the Lazio region. Its waters are among the cleanest in the region, being protected and used as a water reserve. You can choose to relax in one of the numerous beach clubs on the shores, take a pedal boat ride, or simply enjoy an aperitif with a lake view in one of the many venues that dot the coastline.

What to see in the surroundings

  • Anguillara Sabazia: Another village overlooking the lake, famous for its lively waterfront and the historic center that stretches out over the water.
  • Trevignano Romano: A small town much loved for its lakeside promenade and outdoor cafes.
  • Museo Storico dell'Aeronautica Militare: Located in Vigna di Valle, it is an unmissable stop for history and aviation enthusiasts.

When to go

Bracciano is a pleasant destination all year round. Spring and early autumn are the ideal times to explore the historic center and enjoy outdoor walks without the summer heat. In summer, the lake becomes the perfect refuge to combat high temperatures, thanks to the constant breeze that cools the shores.

Practical tips

For an optimal visit, we suggest wearing comfortable shoes, as the historic center of Bracciano is characterized by slopes and cobblestone paving. If you wish to visit the interior of the castle, always check the official website to verify opening hours, which may vary based on the season or any private events.

How to get there

Bracciano is easily reachable from Rome by train. The FL3 regional railway line departs from Roma Ostiense or Roma Tiburtina stations and will take you to your destination in about an hour. If you prefer to travel by car, the village can be reached via the Via Cassia or the Via Braccianese. Parking in the historic center can be limited, so we recommend looking for spaces in the parking areas just outside the medieval core.
